Experts Working at Height

An on-site project for a major steel works presented some unique challenges.

The task required replacing window panelling in an overhead crane cab suspended high up in the steel melting shop.

Preforming all the work in situ and at height required specialist skills and equipment. The project scope included removal of existing glass panels and the steel window frames using a specialist vacuum glass manipulator.

The crane cab required modification to complete the upgrade, a template was used to mark out, drill and tap the crane cab to accept the new window frame.

New glass was secured into the frame with internal beading before the upgraded frame and glass was lifted using the vacuum manipulator and secured into position.

Steve Dobson, Site Engineering Manager said “Working in such conditions presents a number of challenges. We used our 22m Scissor Lift Platform to gain access to melting shop crane and cab. The project was completed on time and to the necessary specification before returning the crane to customer operations.”
