A new drive to help 14 to 16 year olds from South Yorkshire to get ready for the world of work is to be unveiled at the Global Manufacturing Festival.

The Employability Summer Camp is the brainchild of the Work-Wise initiative and is being run by Business & Education South Yorkshire.

Tinsley Bridge Group, along with other leading manufacturing companies across the South Yorkshire region, have offered to take youngsters for a two-week structured work placements and this will provide for up to 200 youngsters during the summer holidays.

Mark Webber, managing director of Tinsley Bridge, which already provides work experience as part of the Work-Wise initiative, said: “Developing skills in the engineering and manufacturing sector is important to the region’s future and demonstrating the potential for careers has to start early.

“Feedback from the current Work-Wise programme has shown there is a demand to also run Work-Wise during the school holidays. Tinsley Bridge is delighted to be an active participant to provide young people with a valuable taster of real working environments.”

The Summer Camp will start with a two day induction and end with a social event. During the work placement each student will have an opportunity to record what they have learned and done and have that endorsed by the company, creating a record which could be used in their CV.

Participants who successfully complete the camp will have their names added to the Work-Wise “graduate” database, guaranteeing them job interviews in the future with Work-Wise employers.

Business & Education South Yorkshire’s John Barber said, “Many of our work-wise students have successfully applied for and secured apprenticeships at the companies they were placed at as part of their work experience while at school.”
