Nicholas Zglobis

Nicholas Zglobis joined Tinsley Bridge Group as a project engineer in 2010 on a three month internship, after which he was offered a permanent position. Initially employed with a flexible brief his role evolved into focusing on design & engineering and sales in the automotive, steel, power generation, rail and defence sectors for Tinsley Bridge Engineering.

Nicholas studied Industrial Design at the University of Loughborough and after graduating in 2009 he was selected onto an international graduate internship with the construction and trading arm of Samsung in South Korea. This was a great opportunity to gain experience of the fast-paced and increasingly dominating Asian business culture.

Nicholas Zglobis

Nicholas said: “I believe Tinsley Bridge gives me the foundations on which to build an exciting career in engineering at the company. It has a long history of international trade, well known for being a global supplier in the commercial automotive suspension market as well as strong credentials in innovation. My job enables me to develop a range of skills and to learn from knowledgeable, skilled and supportive mentors.”

Kevin Charlesworth, Production Director of Tinsley Bridge Engineering, said: “Nicholas has the energy, enthusiasm and passion for engineering. He came with some valuable experience and we trust that we can nurture his obvious talents to help him grow alongside the company. As an industry we need to encourage young people in to engineering and to pass on core skills as well as seek to develop new products and services.”

As part of the company’s commitment to investing in education and training, Tinsley Bridge is funding Nicholas through a Masters in Advanced Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University.

Nicholas maintains his energy levels and keeps his mind active through high adrenalin sports activities, when he isn’t working or studying. He is a keen skier, sailor and motorcycle enthusiast as well as a member of the Scottish Downhill Association for cycling. Sophie Jewitt

Sophie Jewitt is from Sheffield and studied Accounting and Finance at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is working as the Financial Accountant after her work experience was extended to a paid placement and finally a full-time position. During her time at Tinsley Bridge Sophie has continued to study and subsequently become a fully qualified Accountant.

Sophie feels that there are many benefits of working in an SME business, “You don’t get overtaken by everything! I also think that you feel more beneficial to the company since the work force isn’t as large as the big companies and so you don’t get overlooked. You get to learn a lot in a short space of time by getting a really good overview of the entire business. I’ve gained so much experience here as there are a number of companies within the Group."

Sophie Jewitt

“I’ve certainly added some much needed youth to the company which is important in looking towards the next generation of people to work here! And I’ve hopefully increased the likelihood of TBG employing more graduates in the future.”

“The most exciting thing has been preparing the accounts for the end of the financial year, which is always a quite exciting but pressurised time at the company!”

“I have learnt so much in such a short space of time. I’ve had so many experiences and have been involved in a lot of different things which are beneficial to my future that I don’t believe I would have had working in a larger company!”

Tim Wilkinson

Tim Wilkinson, 25, from Fareham, Hampshire, is a Project Engineer at Tyzack Machine Knives, having been seconded from a role at Group level.

Tim studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield from 2006 to 2010, and joined the Tinsley Bridge Group in October 2011 after a stint in retail whilst searching for a position in his favoured industry.

After finding out about the position at Tinsley, Tim worked his way through interviews with many of the senior figures at the company before taking up his current position.

Tim Wilkinson

Tim is currently working in a specialised role with Tyzack in order to assist them in implementing their new computer system, and the move to a new factory. Once this is completed, Tim will then move back to an overall position within the Group, where he will be dealing with CAD and the ever-prevalent health and safety aspects of the organisation.

It was Tim’s love of maths and physics that led him to a career in engineering, and his knowledge of Sheffield and high regard for the University which brought him to the city.

In the future, Tim would like to move into management positions within the industry, particularly within project design and project implementation. He comments: “I really want to streamline production and increase the efficiency of production processes by building on the company’s energy saving policy, namely with their recycling and heating.”

“I think this could be implemented within the Group’s move to the new factory, which will help us in developing and increasing the overall presence of the industry. The major problems facing the company are related to an increase in demand – meaning the strategy must be to increase our rate of production to meet the market’s requests.”

Dave Owens, Technical Director at Tinsley Bridge, said: “Tim undoubtedly brings a fresh approach and a great passion for the role, which we believe will help support the company through changing times and bring it up to speed for the modern age.”

Outside of his work, Tim is a particularly sporty individual – regularly taking part in triathlons and fell running, as well as being a keen rugby player and martial artist!

Xiaotian Xu

Xiaotian Xu – known as Johnson around the office – is a Design Engineer at Tinsley Bridge.

Given his English moniker whilst working at the offices of Jones Lang LaSalle in his native China, Johnson actually began the project he is currently working on during his studies at Sheffield University for an MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering.

After supporting Johnson during his course, Tinsley Bridge then requested that he join them to finish his project after completing his Masters degree in the autumn of 2011.

Xiaotian Xu

The project, along with the staff he had been in contact with, were the main factors in attracting Johnson to Tinsley Bridge, where he has enjoyed the experience he has managed to gain in a wide range of fields.

Born in Ning Bo City, in China’s Zhe Jiang Provice, Johnson had always been interested in mechanical design. On his current project, he said: “It is my most interesting one yet. The practical aspects of the project are also very different to the theory I learnt whilst studying both here in the UK and for my Bachelors degree and MSc in Mechanical back in China.”

“My dream is to work on jet engines, and luckily my current project contains many applications that could help me with in this in the future!”

Barry Race, Quality Manager at Tinsley Bridge, added: “Johnson brings a great level of international experience to Tinsley Bridge which belies his young age. After his work on his university project, we were keen to get him involved with the company more directly.

“He brings with him some great ideas and a grand vision for the project, and just shows that our support for the local university can produce results on a global scale.”
